Decoder Ring

Peter Stevens

New and exciting Australian music comes along so often these days that it becomes hard to keep up with, however out of the pack there is always a particular standout who really make your ears perk up, and one of those bands at the moment is Sydney 5 piece Decoder Ring. A pure instrumental band that mix post rock sounds with electronics to create music reminiscent of great bands such as Mogwai.

Tonight at the Beach Road we were lucky enough to share company with this fabulous team of musicians who's debut album contains so much diversity, that I was pretty clueless to what I should be expecting on the live front. The band took to the stage and opened with a lush slow number, this fit in perfectly with the backdrop containing landscapes and underwater images being projected on the band from the sound desk. The set ebbed and flowed in all the right ways, the music being nothing you would normally hear. Time and tempo changes along with a fine sense of rhythm and experimentation is what makes Decoder Ring such an interesting band.
Things got heavier further into the set with songs containing chunkier riffs and harder beats, this material was heavy in nature but when mixed in with the down tempo numbers it all sat nicely together to create variety and exposed the musical talent of this great up and coming new band.

Definitely check out Decoder Ring if you are thirsty for something new and out of the ordinary.
