Lucy Nosferatu

Decoder Ring is a revelation. At some points watching this band I was so dumbstruck by the overload on all of my senses that I was worried I couldn't fit more in. The visuals (the mastery of Simon Killalea) were not just spirally stuff randomly put up there for effect. These were beautifully thought out short films designed specifically for Decoder Ring's incredible music. The indistinguishable embryo was my favourite film. It would close in on the blood flow of the embryo, and each Heartbeat would coincide with the music. Then it would pan out on the embryo again and it would have grown, almost be recognisable. It takes you until the very end to realise it's a bird, when the screen goes completely white - then a crack appears across it, as the bird begins it's life.
Most of the music is instrumental, and I thought at one point, could the band pull off a good show without the visuals? The answer's most certainly yes. Their sound is like a mixture of Radiohead and AIR, without perhaps some of the complexity. The arrangements are beautifully laid out, sometimes so simply constructed that you would never guess by the overall effect of it.
