The Metro - Sydney

Decoder Ring, Expatriate, Pip Branson Corporation, Julian (Presets DJ's)

I knew when I first saw Decoder Ring play live about 4 years ago, that there was something very special about them, that with their musical expertise and vision they were set to really make an impact on us all. It was clear then, but now it's just plain obvious, even to the everyday Joe (no matter what theyıre into) itıs unlikely that Decoder Ringıs pure magic will leave them untouched. It also remains very clear that these guys arenıt just musicians, theyıre music fans, they know what theyıre doing and they believe in their sound, itıs pouring straight from the heart and washing away all of the cares and stresses of our everyday life. Whatever was going on in our lives before now, itıs all been forgotten as we lose ourselves in the sheer brilliance of what's happening onstage. Not since seeing the mighty Glaswegians Mogwai, have I ever experienced anything quite like this. Playing a steady and well thought-about mix of new material, from their pristine new longplayer Fractions, some intriguing and vision-triggering tracks from last yearıs Somersault score and even managing to touch on a bit from their much-loved, often-overlooked debut, they had us all happily eating out of their hands, whatever they played was exactly what we wanted this evening, they were our dictators and this was our church.

After a few minutes of watching a blurry but captivating image on the screen the band members finally walk out much to the delight of everybody in the room and building up a crescendo they fire into Jets (so to speak), the opening track from Fractions. Singer Lenka has an angelic voice that mesmerises throughout the whole performance, sending shivers down the spine of everybody in the theatre (or was that just me that felt it?).

Seeing Decoder Ring live is more of an experience than just another live show. Thereıs some truly stunning imagery taking up all of the stage, even flowing off the sides and onto the front half of the theatre: a montage of outer space whilst astronauts are floating by, snow-covered mountain tops, underwater shots of tropical fish lazily swimming and three screens of cars racing through tunnels and over bridges sped up to go a million miles an hour.

Beautiful renditions of Somersault, Traffic and More Than Scarlet are performed, the six band members barely visible over the imagery behind them. For some tracks Lenka adds vocals, escalating into choruses, other tracks are instrumental. A lot of layers are used and the sound of guitar and bass mingling with synthesizers is breathtaking. Title-track Fractions is the last song to be performed before the encore. The last track of the evening is Welcome Shoppers, off their self-titled 2002 debut album.

If Australian music carries on like this then we are all very lucky indeed. I will go so far as to say that this was easily one of the best shows Iıve seen all year. At this point in their career Decoder Ring can do no wrong.

Caught the Ring at the Metro on their Fractions tour. I'm really digging this CD. Somersault was cool, but this is the Decoder I know and love. Dancy beats blended with chunky bass and trippy effects. Monochromic had the prime possie at the soundboard, so I took the misus front and centre. Forgot that I had cardioid mics and I was right in front of the bass amp! This equates to a bassed out tape - but a great night. Managed to score a setlist and pick aswell. I don't think the setlist is changing too much these days. Maybe on the next tour they'll mix it up a bit.
