Splendour In The Grass Festival - Byron Bay

Decoder Ring, a highlight from Splendour 2003, were once again in the mix-up tent. They start off their set with a blistering version of "Welcome Shoppers" from their self titled album. The thunderous bass in the intro shook the tent (can you shake a tent??) before they played a bunch of material from their forthcoming album "Fractions" as well as the title track from their "Somersault" soundtrack. The new material seems a little more electronic though no less dramatic than the earlier stuff. Definitely an album to check out once released. Oh, and it goes without saying that the visuals were amazing. I guess that's what happens when the projectionist is counted as a fulltime member of the band.

Decoder Ring sacrifice their quieter moments for coruscating walls of effected guitar and keyboards, topped off by the live intensity of vocalist Lenka. They certainly up the tempo on their atmospheric reputation to almost tear the roof off the Mix-Up Tent. As always with Decoder Ring, itıs hard to walk away with specific moments in mind, such is the overwhelming impression generated by a set that seems all of one piece.

Splendour again, reminds me of my youth. Only taped the Ring this time. A shame they had some laptop issues, but I'm sure most of the crowd didn't notice (including me until playback!) Very similar set to the Annandale gig. Quite a few new songs, one or two each from Spooky Action, LP and Somersault. None from the 'lost period' as I call it. This is a bummer cause some of their best work was between the first album and Somersault - possibly never to be heard again! Still a great gig. Loads more people checking them out this time. You can't keep a good thing down!
