Soundcheck in the Boiler Room... very early in the morning

I entered the grounds around 10:30am to soak up some of the sun and surroundings before submerging myself in the boiler room. Diablo Negro gave us some gothic inspired electro noise at the EAR stage, while in the boiler room Decoder Ring melted hearts with some of the most charming grooves you will hear this year. In an understated set that included a delicious mix of live instrumentation, carefully chosen vocals and electronic nuance, Tom Schutzinger, Matt Fitzgerald, Pete Kelly and Simon K have moved the bar for Australian electro-rock. Heading into the Boiler Room to catch Decoder Ring's set seems a little strange, but once I'm inside it makes perfect sense and I'm thankful for the clearer acoustics that bring out far more electronic layers and subtleties in their sound that might have turned to mush on one of the big outdoor stages.

More atmospheric soundscapes than big-beat dance tracks, the six musicians onstage pour out a heady buzz of horror film-synth-driven meditations, raw upbeat grooves and light-hearted pop that's as danceable as it is emotive. Even the Big Day Out, it appears, has its hidden gems. Part symphony for the subconscious and part soundtrack to your daydreams. hypnotic beats, electronic meanderings, walls of sound/ clanging guitars + bass experimental electro-rock. nothing short of spell binding. Experimental band Decoder Ring played to a packed Boiler Room thanks in part to reaching a growing fan base though the AFI winning Somersault soundtrack. My first BDO and it was mindblowing. Chemical brothers were easily the best thing there followed by Carl Cox then Decoder Ring. All in all easily worth it.

First stop was Decoder Ring. In an era where most Australian rock has become torpid and uninspired (see further down), Decoder Ring verges on the original. Thinking it was strange that they would play to the Boiler Room (traditionally a dance venue,) I found the band onstage receiving a live remix. Dreamy fuzz rock meets trance? Oh, boy, did it work. My eardrums were bleeding after ten minutes from the sheer complexity of the soundscape, but I'll be damned if it didn't make me want to hunt down their albums. (Check out their score for the movie Somersault if you want an obligation-free taste.)
